Motorcycle Towing #1 Safety Hazard

Updated: Jun 23, 2020

From the time I started working on a small trailer to tow behind the Tour Glide, I planned on checking out those swivel neck extensions I'd heard about.

The concept makes sense, because there is a limited amount of movement in regular cup and ball coupling. Plus, the thought of what an out of control trailer could do to a motorcycle's stability is scary.

I can testify that the Swivel Safe is worthwhile addition to any motorcycle trailer. It greatly enhances your safety and peace of mind.

"Generally, when pulling a trailer with a motorcycle, a swivel attachment is one of the best safety devices you could purchase", said Charles Ingersoll, Vice President of Black Tie Accessories, inc. "Although the coupling alone has enough swivel for normal turns, a flat tire on the trailer, tight turns, or any other event that would cause the trailer to flip or tilt could have a disastrous effect on the performance of the motorcycle and would almost certainly cause an accident."

The Swivel Safe has evolved into a rugged, precise component since it was introduced in 1983. The original was a suitable swivel attachment, but the current model has an increased load carrying capacity and long life expectancy.

It has a 3/4-inch chrome-plated steel shaft for the center support. The end blocks are lightweight aircraft quality aluminum with a black, hard anodized finish. The Swivel Safe uses Roulon fiber bushings and a stainless steel thrust bearing.

This unit is strong enough to tow the heaviest weighted down cargo and camper trailers.

The Swivel Safe will fit all two-inch square tongues and has a beveled side to allow wiring to fit inside the frame. It fits standard 1 7/8-inch couplings and comes with all the necessary hardware and instructions.

Ingersoll is an engineer with more than 25 years of experience in machining and manufacturing and develops prototype aircraft fuel and air systems. He has worked with Swivel Safe since conception and first design.

"Though I stayed short of crash testing, I can say the swivel safe, trailer, motorcycle and I survived some serious trails. I internationally ran one trailer tire over a piece of four-by-four board and hit a hole to see how the trailer reacted. The swivel attachment virtually eliminated un-nerving forces on the bike."

This is a must have product for all motorcyclist who have ever towed a trailer.
